11 Cult Musicals You NEED To See

The film adaptation of the Broadway sensation of the same name, John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch is a bold and visionary rock musical. Based on the book co-written by Mitchell and Steve Trask, the plot follows Hedwig (Mitchell), a genderqueer singer from East Germany, as they shadow the tour of successful musician Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt).

Through the songs Hedwig sings with her titular backing band, we learn about her life and the relationship she shared with Tommy before he abandoned her and stole her songs as his own.

A powerfully provocative and genuinely touching film about identity, this musical will have you feeling all the emotions as we get to understand Hedwig and her philosophies on a personal level. An emotional journey illustrated brilliantly through Trask’s compositions, this high-octane musical will have you singing along to the infectiously delightful “Wig In A Box” before having you weep uncontrollably to “Midnight Radio”.

With just as much personality as its protagonist, this film is an icon in both queer cinema and theatre alike. Now forever a part of cult cinema, this fill continues to resonate with audiences today, and will undoubtedly continue to do for years to come.
