If you ever thought that a Christmas zombie musical would never work conceptually, then it’s clear you haven’t seen the wondrous Anna And The Apocalypse.

Directed by John McPhail and written by Alan McDonald and Ryan McHenry (who tragically passed away before his short film Zombie Musical could be transformed into Anna And The Apocalypse), this Scottish horror-musical-comedy follows a group of teens fight for survival during a zombie outbreak. Separated from their families, Anna (Ella Hunt) and friends must make their way through hordes of the flesh-eaters to reach their school, where their loved ones have been seeking shelter.

Bursting with high energy and plenty of heart, this under-seen gem exudes an irresistible likeability thanks to its enigmatic cast, grizzly violence, and sharp humour. And that’s before we even get to the soundtrack.

Just as upbeat and charming as everything else this film has to offer, you won’t be able to get “Hollywood Ending”, “Turning My Life Around”, and “Break Away” out of your head for weeks (but why would you want to?).

What it lacks in biting satire of other recent zombie films, Anna And The Apocalypse makes up for in its fun factor. There’s a new Christmas favourite in town.
