Universal Studio’s new, rebooted Universal Monsters franchise kicks off in 2017 and will see classic 20th century horror films like The Invisible Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon given a modern makeover in the context of a shared universe. Filming has wrapped for the franchise’s first film The Mummy, which first made an appearance in 1932 with the legendary Boris Karloff and more recently in the loosely remade Brendan Fraser fronted series. The movie is set for a summer blockbuster season release.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman and based on a script by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, the reboot will be a mix of horror, action, and adventure, and will feature Tom Cruise as its main protagonist Tyler Colt, Sofia Boutella as a female incarnation of the titular mummy, and Russell Crowe making an appearance as fellow horror icon Dr. Henry Jekyll.

Considering the glut of '80s horror remakes moviegoers have been subjected to of late, it could be quite refreshing to see a new take on earlier horrors, but then anything fronted by Scientology apologist Tom Cruise is a little off-putting.
