11 Horror Sequels That Were Actually Better Than The Original

4. Hostel Part II

The Purge Election Year
Screen Gems

The original Hostel is not a good movie and audiences were likely aware of that judging by this movie's under-performance at the box office in comparison. In most other circumstances a sequel to a terrible horror film under-performing would be satisfying, but that isn't the case here, since Hostel Part II is far superior to its predecessor.

A haunting, shocking and dread-laced horror film filled with nasty, delightfully unsubtle social commentary, Part II is further buoyed by strong performances and a far more effective screenplay than that of its predecessor. Best of all, this time it has a group of main characters who aren't detestable A-holes and who viewers will actually care about, unlike in the original.

Although this will be too brutal for some viewers, Part II is easily one of the best films in the highly dubious torture-porn sub-genre and one really has to hand it to writer-director Eli Roth, as he learnt from his mistakes on the first film and really did the film's thought-provoking premise justice.

The direct-to-DVD Hostel Part III was a lame and pointless addition to the franchise, so Part II is the only good Hostel movie.
