11 Most Horribly Disappointing Movie Supervillain Reveals
5. Whiplash (Iron Man 2)
Iron Man 2 made a lot of rookie mistakes after the brilliance of the first film, and one of its major problems was in failing to give Tony Stark a compelling villain. The seeds were definitely there, but executive interference denied Mickey Rourke's Whiplash the personality and motivation he deserved, turning him into a disappointingly simplistic character. Rourke himself expressed disappointment with how the character appeared in the final cut, stating, "Unfortunately, the at Marvel just wanted a one-dimensional bad guy, so most of the performance ended up on the floor...I didn't work for three months on the accent and all the adjustments and go to Russia just so I could end up on the floor."
Seeing Whiplash get in bed with Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer just wasn't very interesting, and though avenging his father should given the movie plenty of emotional thrust, it fell oddly flat. Then there's the fact that at the end of the movie, he gets kitted out in an awesome suit of armour, only to be promptly destroyed by the team of Stark and Rhodey. This one's particularly frustrating because if you hire an actor of Rourke's talent, why screw around with him?
