The Role: Cameron Post, a gay teenage girl who, following the death of her parents in a car accident, is sent to a "conversion camp" by her conservative guardians.

Why She Might Win: The film won the Grand Jury Prize for US Drama at this year's Sundance - the festival's highest honour - and has been widely praised by critics, with many singling out Moretz, who is said to give by far the best performance of her career to date.

The Academy loves to reward young actors who bare themselves in unexpected ways, and to that end this could be Moretz's first major prestige showing.

Why It's Unexpected: Despite being a generally acclaimed actress, Moretz has largely steered clear of awards and art-house fare, so seeing her in a serious, low-key movie like this isn't exactly ordinary. To many, she's still best-remembered as Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass, after all.
