9. Elizabeth Olsen Opens Up To Josh Brolin And Then Strokes His Shoulder In Oldboy
Why did Spike Lee think it necessary to do a remake of Chan-wook Parks Oldboy? The original version is awesome already. Its not such a big deal to read the subtitles, is it? And the remake didn't turn out to be as good as the original. Josh Brolin didn't even get to eat an octopus like Min-sik Choi before him. Sad. In this scene, Joe has just rescued Marie from a bunch of bad guys. Or actually, a mysterious phone call did. They're driving to Maries place and suddenly she feels the urge to open up to Joe after he admits he used to drink a lot. "I used to use a lot of stuff. Tonight was the first time I want to use again", she tells him quite abruptly, to which Joe does not respond at all. Then she tells him shes glad hes there with her and awkwardly strokes his neck and shoulder for a while, looking at him, and not at the road! Dont try this at home. The genuine surprise on Josh Brolins face he even jumps up a bit begs the question of whether Elizabeth Olsen is improvising, and why director Spike Lee didn't just scrap the shot. Good or bad awkward? Its not a complete disaster, but still bad awkward. Its not clear at all what Lee's intention is. Is this supposed to be an emotional bonding moment? An attempt to give some depth to the characters? We just don't know, dammit.
