11 Unnecessarily Flamboyant Scenes Wasted In Terrible Movies
9. Invisible Floorboards - What Lies Beneath
The Scene: As a paralysed Michelle Pfeiffer lies motionless on the floor, murderous hubby Harrison Ford walks over to her. The camera then pans along the floor, and as it closes in on Pfeiffer's face, it dips underneath the floor to give an even closer look at both her and Ford's faces. Why It's Unnecessary: More than anything, it's an incredibly distracting shot that steals our attention away from the drama unfolding and is therefore a perfect example of style that's more intrusive than impressive. More to the point, director Robert Zemeckis created the shot by having the actors film the scene on a glass floor, with a small gap to allow the camera to crane underneath. Visual effects were then used to paint the floor to look like any regular wooden floorboard. Considering this isn't even the final, climactic moment of the movie, it seems like a total waste, and moreover, it feels like Zemeckis, who is a major proponent of CGI technology, is just showing off for the sake of it. However, it ultimately undercuts what the actors are doing on screen at that time, and that is nothing but a failure of filmmaking.
