11 Unnecessarily Flamboyant Scenes Wasted In Terrible Movies

7. Dr. Lecter Goes To The Opera - Hannibal

The Scene: Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), Inspector Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) and Pazzi's wife are among the audience watching an outdoor opera in Florence. Pazzi observes Lecter who, sensing he is being watched, turns around and gives Pazzi the creepiest of creepy glances before they give an awkward, loaded nod of recognition to one another. Why It's Unnecessary: Considering all this two-minute scene does is convey the unease between Pazzi and Lecter, it seems awfully, needlessly elaborate. We've got a huge opera going on, and Ridley Scott had composer Patrick Cassidy specifically compose the musical piece, Vide Cor Meum, for the movie, all for a few seconds of glancing between two characters. One can't argue with the majesty of the production and Scott's luscious filming...it's just a shame it wasn't put to use in a Hannibal Lecter film that wasn't so tremendously disappointing. Instead, its portent and epic tone feels completely misplaced, even silly, because most Lecter fans were actually pretty bored by this point in the movie.
