The Plot: Terrence Malick's ode to the universe attempts to document its beginning, its current state and its inevitable end amid beautiful visuals and soothing narration from Cate Blanchett (or Brad Pitt in the 40-minute IMAX version).
Why You'll Cry: Nobody does eye-wateringly gorgeous visuals quite like Malick, and we're talking literal eye-watering here. When Malick hits his stride he can deliver an epic, breathtaking sweep like almost no other filmmaker, and 90 minutes of the immensity of our very existence may simply be one of the most transcendent cinematic experiences of recent years.
Malick has of course dipped his toe in this specific area of filmmaking before with the celestial asides in The Tree of Life, and considering that this is his long-gestating project from back in the late 1970s, it may very well be the summation of everything Malick has done up to this point.
