10. A Burnout Cop And A Computer Hacker (Die Hard 4.0)

John McClane (Bruce Willis) has utilised the assistance of a number of individuals throughout the Die Hard film series, from the plausible, such as law enforcement agents, to the more unorthodox. The last three films in the series have given him a partner that remains ever-present throughout the film, one of whom well get to later. For now, however, we focus on Die Hard 4.0, released in the States as Live Free or Die Hard. Released 12 years after Die Hard With A Vengeance, 4.0 initially sees McClane as a despondent wreck, shunned by his daughter Lucy. Asked to pick up a known computer hacker, Matt Farrell (Justin Long), in the wake of a computer outage at the FBI, he is drawn into a large scale cyber attack that threatens the entire infrastructure of the United States. An unlikely partnership with Farrell then ensues. Though he initially finds the boy pathetic, a grudging respect begins to develop between the two as they try and prevent the actions of the villainous Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) in what is a surprisingly enjoyable action film until the questionable final act.
