Cause Of Death: Death by tornado.

Original Transformers franchise protagonist Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) made his final appearance in 2011's Dark of the Moon, and ever since there's been little reference to his continued existence in this universe.

However, the most recent movie did make a vague suggestion about Witwicky's fate, as Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins) declared himself to be the last surviving member of the Witwiccans, the secret society tasked with protecting the Transformers on Earth.

As Sam himself is a member of the order, and a picture of him is briefly shown during this scene, it's therefore somewhat implied that Sam has died off-screen, but how, exactly?

Well, on the press tour for 2014's Age of Extinction, Mark Wahlberg posited a snappy answer: "Two years ago, Sam and his entirely family were swept away. Not by robots...by a tornado while crossing country, so they won’t be in this film. Cut to boom."

Sam's apparent demise does raise one major question, though. Stephen Hawking is also shown to be a Witwiccan in the film, so does that mean he's dead too, despite still being very much alive in reality? Are we to assume this is an alternate reality where Mr. Hawking is already dead...because reasons?

Either way, Sam clearly never had long to enjoy life with his beautiful new supermodel girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), making him the series' most tragic figure by quite some margin.
