12 Anticipated 2015 Movies That Have Already Lost The Oscar Race

3. Truth

The Hype: A docu-drama based on the infamous Killian documents controversy of 2004, where 60 Minutes aired a report scrutinising George W. Bush's military service, which later turned out to be based on dubious sources, causing legendary news anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) and his producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) to lose their jobs. I mean, just look at Redford playing Rather. This has Oscar written all over it. Why It's Lost The Oscar Race: Truth's TIFF premiere led to mostly positive reviews from the fest, though they largely sat in the 3-star range. Despite receiving so much attention pre-release, Redford reportedly takes a supporting back seat throughout the film to Blanchett's Mapes, who stole the lion's share of the critical praise, even if most concede that the film on the whole is too simplistic to really take either of its stars to the Oscars. It could've been a classic piece of filmmaking about journalism like All the President's Men or Frost/Nixon, but instead it'll have to settle for being a solid drama not likely to be remembered in few years' time.
