12 Awesome Summer 2018 Movies You Probably Missed
1. Apostasy
Between First Reformed, the Rachel Weisz-starring drama Disobedience and Apostasy, it's been a banner year for stripped-down movies about crises of faith.
Apostasy may be ultra-low budget and totally lacking in star power, but that only makes its indictment of cult-like religious sects all the more powerfully authentic.
A family of Jehovah's Witnesses are torn apart as the demands of the faith take hold, with two siblings (Sacha Parkinson and Molly Wright) struggling to abide by their mother's (Siobhan Finneran) unwavering rule.
The trio of central performers are absolutely magnetic, making even the simpler, quieter moments of this deeply upsetting film enormously compelling. Much like Lean on Pete you'll want something fun lined up to watch afterwards, because it's as uncompromising a drama as has been released all year.
Have you actually seen any of these low-key summer releases? What did you think? Shout it out in the comments!
