8. Certain Women

Director Kelly Reichardt once again teams up with frequent collaborator Michelle Williams in her latest feature Certain Women – a poignant series of three loosely connected stories that explore the lives of three very different women living in rural Montana and that scooped Best Film at last year’s London Film Festival.

Laura Dern plays a lawyer whose male client won’t take her counsel seriously. Williams plays a dissatisfied wife and mother who pours her energy into building a weekend cottage retreat. The third story features an achingly honest performance from Lily Gladstone as a ranch hand who develops a friendship with an out of town lawyer and teacher played by Kristen Stewart.

Like many of Reichardt’s works Certain Women is a typically quiet film in which not a great deal happens, at least not in terms of the usual Hollywood plot-moving devices. Rather, it’s a moving snapshot of three lonely women as they try to navigate through their daily lives.
