12 Biggest Genuine Shocks In MCU History
10. Mysterio Was Powerless
Taking creative licence with certain characters is something that Marvel Studios has gotten quite good at over the years. There have been changes to the source material, and while some of these aspects have fallen flat, more often than not they have made a character or a story better.
In the build-up to Spider-Man: Far From Home, Quentin Beck’s Mysterio was portrayed as a hero. The trailers showed the illusions that the rest of the MCU world bought, but real-world fans weren’t so easily fooled.
Even those only vaguely familiar with Spider-Man’s history would be aware that Mysterio was a villain, but the movie still managed to bring a colossal surprise involving the character. Generally in the comics, Mysterio’s illusion powers had come from genuinely special abilities, which is of course what everyone expected from the MCU.
However, the moment it was revealed that Quentin Beck was just a normal man with a brilliant mind and a lot of drones, fans were rightly shocked. This changed the character completely, and though it was easy to fall into the trap of being disappointed, this arguably made him a more compelling villain. If only he hadn’t made such a point of how Tony Stark named his illusion tech.
