12 Delayed 2021 Movies That Really Weren't Worth The Wait
5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Five years after the surprisingly excellent The Conjuring 2, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It landed in cinemas with a whimper and stands as not just as one of the most disappointing films of the year, but also one of the most disappointing horror sequels of them all.
Granted, there were some pre-release worries since James Wan wasn't directing and director Michael Chaves' other contribution to the franchise, The Curse of La Llorona, was nothing special, but given how good the first two Conjuring flicks were it was hard to predict just how weak this would end up being.
While the cast still have it and the period detail is once again strong, this is ultimately a lazy, unscary and staggeringly boring damp squib of a threequel that lacks any sort of punch. Where the first two Conjuring movies felt like middle fingers to the underwhelming supernatural horror films studios dumped on viewers throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, The Conjuring 3 instead feels like one of those.
After this, it's hard to feel much enthusiasm about The Conjuring Universe going forward, especially since one of the next ones will be an entirely unasked-for sequel to 2018's The Nun. Oh boy.
