Look, it’s Roland Emmerich making a sequel to Independence Day; dumb was always going to be on the menu. Sadly in the last few years, Roland’s movies have reached a supernova of dumbness not even his supporters can tolerate.

Independence Day: Resurgence continues this downward spiral; the new heroes suck, the plot is dull and it lacks the sense of fun the original had in spaces. While Will Smith wisely bailed out for Suicide Squad, the film tried to bring back every member of the cast it could. This includes – for no logical reason – Brent Spiner as Dr Okun.

Okun was a minor player in the original, who quite clearly died after an alien uses him as a puppet. Not so, claims the sequel, revealing the good doctor was actually put into a twenty-year coma instead. It’s eye-rolling nonsense of the first order, and it’s doubtful anyone even liked the character enough to care if he came back; sorry, Mr Spiner.
