12 Greatest Horror Films Of The Last 5 Years
10. The Woman In Black (2012)
It's rare these days for a horror film to exist without a healthy dose of gore to go along with it (at the very least the threat is usually upped through violence) but The Woman In Black rejects this notion to focus primarily on chills.
Directed by James Watkins, The Woman In Black was released in 2012 and stars Daniel Radcliffe as Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer who travels to a remote village to orchestrate the sale of Eel Marsh House. There, he encounters a vengeful spirit who terrorizes him.
It might dole out genre clichés in droves, but cliché isn't necessarily damning as long as the material is handled well. In the case of The Woman In Black, it succeeds – the nineteenth century setting is convincing across the board, from the costumes to the huge, creaking Eel Marsh House.
Radcliffe, too, puts in a good performance as Kipps, and Ciaran Hinds is an enigmatic delight as local landowner Sam Daily. Traditional yet effective, The Woman In Black does nothing less than it sets out to do by providing predictable yet effective chills.
