12 Key Influences In Batman Begins

5. Joe Chill's Death

In Batman Begins, Bruce goes to a court hearing of Joe Chill (Richard Brake), the man who killed his parents many years prior, with the intention of murdering him when he leaves the court room. However, as Bruce moves in for the kill, a female assassin shoots Chill dead under Carmine Falcone's (Tom Wilkinson) employ. This is a direct reflection of the 1987 comic Batman: Year Two, where Batman is forced to team up with Chill to help take down a vigilante known as The Reaper. Once The Reaper is believed to be dead, Batman reveals his identity to Chill and puts a gun to his head, apparently intending to kill him, but before he can fire, The Reaper re-emerges and murders Chill himself. Both of these scenes are great, because they effectively serve to reinforce the boundaries of Batman's methods, namely his famous no-kill rule.
