12 Lesser Known Fall Movies You Should Be Excited About
3. Carol
Release date: November 20 (US) / November 27 (UK)
Carol is an incredible looking romantic drama that pairs two extremely talented actresses together, takes place in 1950s New York City, and based on early footage is full of some absolutely stunning cinematography. It's the sort of film where you want to frame every single image of it on you wall.
Based on the novel The Prince Of Salt, the film tells the story of Therese (Rooney Mara), a young department store clerk who falls for a married woman, Carol (Cate Blanchett). After being in development hell for several years, the movie finally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival a few months ago to overwhelmingly positive reactions. Rooney Mara also took home the award for Best Actress.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Carol holds a 95% score based on 21 reviews, and critics have praised the film as a tender love story with two amazing performances from Blanchett and Mara. It'll be great to see Mara in another major film after taking some more minor roles over the past few years, and the trailer with its beautiful feeling of classic '50s romance just hits all the right notes. Carol is being distributed by The Weinstein Company, so expect a massive Oscar push for it in a few months.
