There sure are a lot of big films based on very recent world events on the horizon. There's Oliver Stone's Snowden, Michael Bay's 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, the several Boston Marathon movies in development, but by far the most intriguing is The 33, based on the true story from 2010 of the trapped Chilean miners.

Directed by Patricia Riggen, The 33 stars Antonio Banderas as Mario, the man who made the miners' daily videos to show to the public and assure everyone they were okay. It was produced by Apocalypse Now's Mike Medavoy, who supposedly worked with the miners and their families personally in order to do the story justice.

The 33 actually already opened in Chile, where it had the second biggest opening for a Chilean film ever. Although the director and much of the cast is relatively unknown to American audiences, the first trailer shows a lot of promise, and if done correctly, this is one of those true stories that could make for an equally heartbreaking and inspiring journey.
