12 Live-Action Anime Projects You Didn’t Know Were Happening
2. Yu Yu Hakusho
Yu Yu Hakusho is an anime that has gone on to achieve legendary status. It's an iconic series with almost no flaws, featuring great action, powers, comedy and a thrilling story. So, with all that being said, it's a project with enormous shoes to fill, and Netflix has (as this article has hopefully made clear) failed at filling up something of that size before.
The story follows a young boy called Yusuke Urameshi after he dies saving a kid. From there, he becomes a spirit detective and seeks to protect the world alongside a group of comrades.
This is the first project on the list with some extensive first looks, with character shots of *deep breath* Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke, Kanata Hongo as Hiei, Jun Shinson as Kurama and Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma. They look strong so far, with a darkness that seems edgy as hell.
A vital piece of information that makes this adaptation so promising is that Netflix Japan are in charge of casting and production, meaning many of the pitfalls of westernised anime adaptations might be avoided. Fans will find out if it pulls it off relatively soon, as it's currently slated for a December 2023 release.
