8. Unsuspecting Fireman (REC.)
Going back to the World Cinema theme - Handheld Spanish Gore-fest, "REC." (as in Record - not Shipwreck as everyone I tell about this film so wrongly assumes) is without a doubt, my favorite horror movie ever. Set almost solely in an old-school Barcelona apartment block, REC. shows the events of a full scale quarantine through the eyes of a film-crew trapped inside the infected building. Along with a dozen scared residence, the B-star TV host and her cameraman are in accompaniment with some out-of-their-depth emergency services. As the terrified police officer attempts to keep control, one of the firemen (I think his name may be Manu, but I'm not entirely sure) offers to stay with old, crazy, axe swinging, boob lady (watch the film and have the pleasure of understanding the origins of that name!). As the action returns to the entrance hall, and the trapped characters begin to argue among themselves, their fear is united when a scream, followed shortly by the bloodied body of Manu, drops like a stone down the stairwell. It the ultimate shock as we see it slightly off center from the rest of the action, capturing it only in its final stage through the lens of the camcorder. We witness it, as the characters witness it and it delivers such a brutally scary but nevertheless epic moment in the film - a moment that sparks utter chaos and carnage for the rest of the 88 minute run-time!
