12 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Remakes Ever
3. The Thing
Okay, before anyone comes for our heads—it’s not as
good as Carpenter’s original (well, Carpenter’s remake, but the film which this
one is clearly meant to be remaking). With that out of the way, is this Mary
Elizabeth Winstead starring action horror sci-fi thriller really as flat and
lifeless as critics claimed upon its 2011 release?
Or is it possible that, in all of the “practical effects vs CGI”, we all missed out on a pretty solid, if admittedly far from superior, body-swapping chiller?
The flick boasts a pretty solid cast including a typically stoic Joel Edgerton and its CGI assisted transformations may be disappointingly lifeless, but for the opening half of the film their limited onscreen exposure means that a nicely creepy atmosphere is developed. And yes, the denouement may go over the top in its explanations of the enigmatic titular Thing, but Winstead makes for a resilient and likeable heroine and a few gory sequences make this one worth a watch.
Also, it is technically a prequel, so the whole “not as good” argument isn’t totally fair here.
