12 Movie Sequels That Luckily Didn't Happen

2. Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian

Beetlejuice is Tim Burton at his most peculiar and ingenious. Released in 1988, the original film revolves around a deceased couple - now ghosts - who seek help from Beetlejuice the "bio-exorcist" (Michael Keaton) to get rid of the new family who have moved into their house. It's silly, incredibly funny and wonderfully dark.

Two years later, Tim Burton attempted to ruin it all by hiring screenwriter Jonathan Gems to write a follow up called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. The proposed film would have seen the Deetz Family moving to Hawaii and finding out that Mr Deetz new work project is being conducted on an ancient burial ground.

Oh, and Beetlejuice wins a surfing contest by using magic.

Worryingly, both Winona Ryder and Keaton agreed to star in the film (so long as Burton was directing), but the whole project fell through when Burton and Keaton began making Batman Returns. After his Batman adventure was done, Burton still wanted to make it, but couldn't get a script to stick (he called in Kevin Smith at one point, who turned down the gig to write the aforementioned Superman Lives. Ouch).

According to Gems, the script is still owned by The Geffen Production Company, and he has conceded that the film will never be made because too much time has passed. On a positive note, we got the Broadway musical, and that was great. The sequel wouldn't have been.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
