12 Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming
6. The Forever Purge
That's right, there is another Purge movie on the way, and apparently this is the last one. Screenwriter James DeMonaco recently made the announcement that the surprise hit franchise would soon be coming to a "really cool ending". De Monaco wrote and directed the first three films before handing over directorial duties for the well received prequel The First Purge to Derin Jacob, with Everardo Gout taking over the directorial duties for this apparent final entry. The film is currently scheduled for a Summer 2020 release, although this now seems extremely unlikely.
For a franchise that didn't exactly start out with a bang, it has continued to churn out films of a good, if not great quality. Each entry has explored the concept, where governments initiate a single day where any crime can be committed without repercussions, in increasingly engaging and innovative ways. The ability to keep the franchise feeling fresh has been a major reason why The Purge films have remained so profitable, its low budget also helping on this front.
It will be interesting to see how DeMonaco and Gout finish off the series, or where in the timeframe the movie occurs. The latest entry in the franchise's chronology, Election Year, saw the purges officially ceased, with a range of protests occurring across the nation against this decision. This is presumably where the story will pick up, but where the 'forever' part of the title fits in will be interesting to see.
