7. Severus Snape (Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows- Part 2)

The Grinch
Warner Bros.

Lily Potter’s long-suffering admirer proved to be one of the saddest and most complicated characters in the Harry Potter series. Introduced and maintained throughout much of the series as a long standing antagonist to the titular character, Snape’s true nature is only revealed post mortem when Potter takes his memories to a Pensieve.

Frequently bullied by Harry’s dad James in school, Snape had in fact being protecting Harry all along due to his love for Lilly. Allied with Dumbledore, we discover the grumpy Snape killed him by request due to the severe nature of Dumbledore’s ailments. On top of that, it was Snape’s patronus that lead Harry to discover the Sword of Gryffindor.

Rethinking everything we thought we knew about the seemingly sinister Severus, the final film reveals him to be among the key heroes of the series. Masterfully portrayed by the late, great Alan Rickman in all 8 films, Snape’s mysterious and melancholy life story as a Death Eater double agent is amongst the most poignant aspects of the beloved franchise.
