12 Reasons Spider-Man: Homecoming Is The Best Spidey Movie Ever
8. Romance Takes A Backseat
It would be absurd to claim that romance has no place in the Spider-Man movies, because of course it does, and the Raimi movies did a mostly excellent job of depicting the anguished Peter-MJ romance. Even the Webb movies eventually hit gold with Peter and Gwen's love story, thanks to her iconic death scene in the second movie.
Perhaps sensing they wouldn't quite be able to match the Raimi approach to romance, Homecoming scales the romantic drama down considerably: there's no damsel-in-distress moment, and though Spidey's love interest Liz is eventually tied into the plot, it's ultimately not that important to the overall narrative.
There is one big hint as to where this could go in future movies, but smartly the love story is kept firmly in the periphery, where many would argue it belongs.
