Already a worldwide star on the back of her performances in Sam Rami's Spider-Man trilogy, the former child actor delivered something of a career reinvention when she aligned herself with controversial Danish auteur Lars von Trier in this science-fiction drama that nabbed her the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Dunst was unable to ride the wave through to the Academy Awards several months down the line but her performance remains undoubtedly worthy of such acclaim - a turn by parts introspective and brazen, underlined with a particularly impressive power from the off.
