12 Surprisingly Touching Moments In Extremely Macho Movies

3. The Dark Knight Rises €“ Alfred Says Goodbye

For two and a half movies we'd seen Alfred Pennyworth faithfully serve his young master and give him the father figure that he lost so early in his life. In Batman Begins, he actively supports Bruce's mission to rid Gotham City of the scum that ruined so many innocent lives but, as the repercussions of that decision become more and more severe, his doubts begin to creep in. Those doubts finally come to a head when Bruce decides to take up the cape and cowl again after 8 years in retirement. The impetus for this decision is the appearance of Bane; an extremely formidable foe, both physically and mentally. Alfred tries to dissuade Bruce, firstly by highlighting how much more capable Bane is; then, after that doesn't work, he admits to withholding a crucial revelation about Rachel after she died. It all proves too much for Bruce as he turns away from the one man who has stood by him his entire life. It's an extremely moving moment and it's all down to Michael Caine's fantastic delivery of the following €“ "It means your hatred and it also means losing someone that I have cared for ever since I first heard his cries echo through this house. But it might also mean saving your life. And that is more important." You don't get material like that in Batman And Robin.
