Why It's Terrible: Nicolas Winding Refn serves up another stylish thriller labelled by its defenders as "divisive" and "controversial", when in reality it's just more self-indulgent drivel from a wildly over-praised filmmaker who probably doesn't deserve his station.

Refn's tale of the catty modeling industry is desperately trying to evoke the intoxicating style and mood of David Lynch, but aside from some solid visuals, it mostly reeks of a student filmmaker overreaching like his life depends on it.

Why It'll Be A Cult Classic: A film this weird and good-looking will always find its cheerleaders, so expect The Neon Demon's demented shenanigans to be incessantly lauded by hipsters over the next few years... at least until Refn comes out with something else.

You'll tell them it's pretentious, they'll reply with, "I know", and you'll storm away in an angry huff.
