There’s been talk of transferring Stephen King’s Western inspired, futuristic fantasy series The Dark Tower to the silver screen for almost a decade – with J.J. Abrams first reportedly signed on as director, followed by Ron Howard – and finally the long-awaited film adaptation will see the light of day with Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel directing and Howard still attached to the project as producer.

Some fans of the book series are already miffed that its protagonist gunslinger Roland Deschain, described as blue-eyed and white in the novels, will be played by Idris Elba and other rumoured inconsistencies like starting the action in the middle of the series storyline and locating the film in the modern day rather than the original alternate and futuristic timeline may rub the wrong way too. Not to mention the fact that books are always difficult to adapt to the screen and in particular King’s whose book to film adaptations range from the excellent (The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption) to the pretty bad – Dreamcatcher or Children of the Corn, anyone?
