To date there are a total of 12 films in the Friday the 13th franchise, including 2003’s laughably bad Nightmare on Elm Street crossover Freddy vs. Jason and most recently a generally panned 2009 reboot, but apparently there’s life in the old hockey masked murderer yet and after a few setbacks, a second reboot is scheduled to hit cinema screens in early 2017.

It’s had quite a tumultuous production history so far. David Bruckner, whose resume includes directing segments for horror anthologies V/H/S and Southbound, was first signed on as director but left the project in late 2015 for reasons unknown, though fan reaction to his planned found footage approach may have had something to do with it. Scriptwriter Nick Antosca (whose credits include TV shows Teen Wolf and Hannibal) was recently replaced by Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski and though currently director-less, producer Brad Fuller has assured fans the reboot is now on the right tracks.

The question is though, does the world really need yet another Jason Voorhees film? No doubt a few will flock to see it out of morbid curiosity and there’s the chance it could reinvigorate the franchise for a whole new generation of horror fans, but whether it’ll be any good is another matter.
