12 Upcoming Movies That Have Ignored Massive Mistakes
4. Giving A Big Budget To An Unknown Director - Mortal Engines

The Lesson: 47 Ronin
Unless you're Marvel Studios, it's an extremely bad idea to give an inexperienced indie filmmaker a tentpole budget, because typically, directors only used to working with tiny budgets struggle with the demands of directing a blockbuster movie.
Remember the 2013 Keanu Reeves-starring samurai action flick 47 Ronin? No? Well, Universal gave director Carl Rinsch - who had only directed three short films prior - an insane $175 million budget to make his movie, and to the surprise of nobody, it was a critical and commercial flop.
The upcoming adaptation of Philip Reeve's adventure novel Mortal Engines is sadly giving off a similar vibe. Though it's a little less risky with a "mere" $100 million budget, visual effects artist Christian Rivers has never directed a movie before, and this is quite the deep end to throw him into.
At least he's got producer Peter Jackson guiding him, but even then, that's no guarantee of success. And even if Rivers does defy the odds to deliver a solid movie, the December release date and lack of name stars will pretty much guarantee it bombs at the box office this Christmas.
