12 Worst Movie Spin-Offs Ever Made
6. Evan Almighty
Bruce Almighty was the last blockbuster-sized hit of Jim Carrey's career after coming close to hitting the $500m mark at the box office, but the actor's continued reluctance to take part in sequels saw director Tom Shadyac and Steve Oedekerk look to capitalize on the original's success by developing a spinoff focused on Steve Carell's scene-stealing supporting character instead.
Evan Almighty was a huge gamble from the outset, with the decision to spend $175m on a comedy that featured the still-unproven Carell in the lead and didn't even boast the security of Jim Carrey's star power raising plenty of eyebrows. These well-founded suspicions were confirmed when not only did it turn out to be a terrible movie that was universally rejected by both critics and audiences, it wound up as one of the biggest box office bombs in history, failing to even recoup the massive budget and resulting in a loss of over $100m for Universal.
