13 Best Horror Movies On Shudder Right Now
1. Let The Right One In (2009)
It’s got to be the best vampire film ever made. Where most vampire films succumb to the temptations of gothic campiness, carnal overindulgence, or, worst of all, becoming standard Monster flicks, Let the Right One In is a sanguine-sweet coming-of-age story that recaptures the wonderment of what vampires are.
Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) is a twelve year old boy who meets Eli (Lena Leandersson), a vampire who looks to be a similar age. She drinks blood, she smells like death, and has been alive for a long time. What begins as a mutual fascination with one another turns into first love for Oskar, and who knows which number love for Eli.
Eli is a wonderful vampire creation. Whereas other movie vampires are often obsessed with sadism and sex, Eli’s prime concern is taking care of Oskar. Her feeding is purely a thirst for blood, not a lust for it. But still, innocent people must die for Eli to survive, and watching her ruthless attack people reveals her monstrous nature.
And this is what fascinates both Oskar and us. Eli’s vampirism is a curse, one which we are invited to share. Besides, who wouldn’t want a girlfriend that beheads your school bullies?
