4. Shadow Dancer

Shadow Dancer Clive Owen Andrea Riseborough
Paramount Pictures

Probably one of the most under-appreciated thrillers of the last five years, Shadow Dancer sees Andrea Riseborough on top form as an IRA member whose botched attempt at a terrorist attack causes her to fall under the thumb of a dedicated MI5 officer (Clive Owen).

Riseborough perfectly conveys the anguish of her duty to her cause and duty to her family (she has a young son who is leveraged against her), while Owen is as reliable as usual. James Marsh's direction really pushes this one over the top, slowly building uneasy suspense towards a shocking conclusion that leaves much for the audience to discuss.

Not a major film by any means, but an incredibly tight, 70s-inspired espionage thriller all the same, where every single scene fires on all cylinders.
