7. The Nun Painting (The Conjuring 2)
The Scene: Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) finds her daughter staring at the demon nun in the hallway of her home, and follows the entity into their office. Once inside, however, she can only see what appears to be the painting of said nun painted by her husband Ed (Patrick Wilson) earlier in the movie.
Lorraine soon realises that the demon is in fact in the room, as it walks up to the painting and, after a time, makes the painting come to life, screaming and charging towards Lorraine as it does so.
Why It's Awesome: It's without question one of the most effective scares from a horror movie in years, and seems destined to go down as an all-timer. If you didn't bring a spare pare of underwear to the cinema, you were seriously screwed.
It's beautifully directed by James Wan to milk the maximum amount of suspense and hold the audience in breathless pause for as long as possible. Screw that nun. Oh, and Lorraine should probably have just burned the painting the second she saw it.
