What The Critics Said: J.K. Rowling's expansion of the Harry Potter universe received strong notices for its apparently strong world-building, sharp visuals and entertaining ensemble cast.

Why It Actually Sucked: Well, the cast definitely was decorated, but for the majority they weren't left to do much interesting in this weirdly bland fantasy flick that also squandered its intriguing 1920s New York setting.

Generic and dull, the film's worst offense of all is that it's merely the first in a franchise of five planned movies, and for some reason decided to deliver a laughable last-minute twist, where antagonist Colin Farrell was inexplicably switched-out for Johnny Depp, who will play series antagonist Gellert Grindelwald. Christ.

It barely does the job for the Potter devoted who would largely love it anyway, but outside of this fanbase, it's an absolute slog to get through.
