13 Incredible Moments In Otherwise Forgettable Movies

3. The Rainstorm Car Chase - We Own The Night

The Movie: A mob thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall, directed by James Gray (The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z), no less? As appealing as that all sounds, the strong performances at the core get lost amid Gray's murky, cliched script, riddled with melodrama and procedural cop movie cliches.

It's totally watchable, largely thanks to the ever-reliable Phoenix, but you probably won't remember you saw it within a week or two.

The Scene: This movie has an absolutely electrifying mid-film car chase, in which Bobby Green (Phoenix) and his family are targeted by armed assassins.

It only lasts a few minutes, but it's a thunderously intense sequence thanks to Gray's excellent direction, Phoenix's sublimely panicky performance and the baffling yet brilliant decision to change the sequence from sunny to rainy in post-production (requiring extensive colour grading and CGI work).

The lorry causing an epic pile-up and the savagely unsentimental death of Bobby's father Burt (Robert Duvall) make this one of the low-key best car chases of the 21st century, albeit in an otherwise mediocre movie.
