11. Ozymandias Did It - Watchmen

Okay, so if you read Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel, you knew the big twist of Watchmen before seeing it on the big screen, but for everyone else, the good-guy-heel-reveal twist at the end was hugely effective.

There are few things more dangerous than a bad guy who thinks he's doing the right thing, but Watchmen finds one in the shape of Ozymandias, who is a rare villain who actually IS doing the right thing. It's not pretty to watch, and there's a lot of collateral damage along the way, but his plan to kill off Manhattan's population in order to save the world from nuclear war does have a lot of logic.

And the set up to his reveal is an exercise in genius misdirection - but then, conceived in his mind, of course it would be - with a series of complex chess moves (including an attempt on his own life) that seem to suggest he is completely outside of suspicion. When the revelation comes it rings true, and it is cemented rather gravely by the heroes' acceptance that they have to conceal his plan for the good of the world.
