13 Most Shocking Comic Book Movie Twists Of All Time

10. Talia - The Dark Knight Rises

It's something of a shame that the big twist at the end of The Dark Knight Rises so horribly undermines Tom Hardy's Bane as a character, but it's a necessary sacrifice to really sell the deception. And while there have been accusations that it's something of an ass-pull, that's probably only because Bane's "anti-establishment", villain of the people propaganda is so effective.

There's always an element of unpopularity to twists that pull the audience's pants down so effectively, because of how foolish they feel, but again, it comes down to the art of the rug pull. In setting up Miranda so perfectly as a harmless supporting figure (even with the Bondian seduction trope thrown in), Nolan made it impossible that she was a bad egg, which of course was the point.

Again, the authenticity of the twist relied somewhat on the audience not listening to the leaks before the release (such is the world of "ace scoopers" we live in), but for those lucky enough not to read it, the twist worked really well. Particularly as it closed the circle on Nolan's trilogy, mirroring the reveal that Henri Ducard was actually Ra's Al Ghul in the first place.
