13 Movies You Really Wanted To Hate (But Actually Couldn’t)
1. Titanic
James Cameron is best known as the macho, temperamental genius behind The Terminator, Aliens and Piranha 2: The Spawning, so when it was announced he was making a soppy romance based around the sinking of the Titanic, the critics readied their extra sharp cutting knives.
Why You Wanted To Hate It: Because it looked like a major folly from the outset, with Cameron going over budget and over schedule, and 20th Century Fox apparently being very nervous. The cast was made up of mostly unknowns, Cameron was apparently a nightmare to work with and a romantic drama from the director of Terminator 2 just didn’t sound like it was going to work.
The Reasons You Couldn’t: History proved Cameron's tactics correct, since Titanic became one of the biggest movies of all time, it swept the Oscars, and it spite of a small backlash in the years since, it’s still considered a classic. It's epic filmmaking the likes of which are rarely seen anymore, and despite the lack of subtlety its hard not to get invested in the characters.
