13 Outrageously Awful 2014 Performances That Deserve Razzies
8. Sullivan Stapleton As Themistocles - 300: Rise Of An Empire
To its credit, 300: Rise of an Empire was on the whole infinitely more entertaining than it had any right to be, in large part due to the insane action and Eva Green's mental performance as crazed naval commander Artemisia (and some superb nudity). Lead Sullivan Stapleton, who played protagonist Themistocles? Not so much. One of the most generic actors to step into the limelight this year, Stapleton just lacks the charisma or enthusiasm to live up to Gerard Butler's fantastic work as King Leonidas, and as such his work here is simply destined to be remembered as Butler-lite. Where are the awesome one-liners? The brute-force displays of physicality? In every aspect, in part due to the lesser script, Themistocles just isn't that interesting. Instead, Stapleton plays frequent second fiddle to Artemisia, who may as well be the real protagonist given how easily she steals every scene she's in. The second Themistocles is off screen, it's just difficult to remember what he looks like: he's from the same production line as the likes of Sam Worthington and Jai Courtney.
