There really is no creature feature quite like Gareth Edwards' Monsters: to look at the film, you'd have no idea it only cost $500k, with Edwards using his considerable visual effects experience to produce visually complex shots from his home computer. As for the story itself, the monsters ended up taking a backseat to the curious relationship drama, while the film delivered quite the knock-out twist at its climax, resulting in one of the weirdest sex scenes you'll ever see on film. Edwards has moved onto bigger and (hopefully) better things with his impending Godzilla reboot, though a tangential follow-up to Monsters, subtitled Dark Continent, has been made and is due for an unspecified release in 2014. Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones' Gendry) plays the protagonist, a soldier who enters an infected zone to find a friend, and appears to have little relation to the original movie, merely existing in the same world and set of circumstances. Even those who loved the original movie probably don't much care for the idea of a sequel, though at least it has enough distance from the original that it can be easily dismissed if it sucks.
