14 So-Called ‘Must-See’ Films In 2014 (That Might Actually Be Worth Watching)

11. Guardians Of The Galaxy

Release Date: 1st August Why It€™s A Must See: It€™s Marvel€™s biggest gamble yet. As they become ever more invincible, let€™s not forget the miracle Marvel has performed. Having given away the rights to most of their top tier characters, they were left with a bunch of B-heroes; ask a non-comic obsessive in 2007 their opinions on Iron Man and Thor and you€™d have got nothing but a blank stare. They had no choice to take a few risks; the director of Elf and a rehabbed Robert Downey Jr. tackled €˜Batman without the murder€™ and a Shakespeare alum turned a Norse God into a sci-fi epic-cum-fish out water comedy. So when Guardians Of The Galaxy is described as Marvel€™s biggest gamble yet, that€™s a pretty big deal. Directed by James Gunn, whose previous film Super was all but ignored, the Guardians are a team of rogues, including an eighties Earth man, the daughter of The Avengers' mid-credits tease, a genetically engineered raccoon and a talking tree whose vocabulary extends to one word. It's incredibly tantalising to see something so new on the big screen. Why You Should Be Worried: Gambles can always fail. If Iron Man was B-list, this is F-list. The Marvel name aside Guardians is a wholly new idea and we know how much audiences are wary of those. There€™s no Iron Man to draw you in, and the film€™s most high profile actor (Bradley Cooper) isn't actually onscreen €“ he's voicing Rocket Racoon. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel is a tree. Bottom Line: Groot.
