14 Directors Who Desperately Need A Hit Movie

5. Brian De Palma

Though he's somehow never even been nominated for an Oscar, Brian De Palma is nevertheless one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, having directed iconic works such as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito's Way and Mission: Impossible.

And that's pretty much where he fell off a cliff creatively, with the last 20 years serving up wall-to-wall critical and commercial duds, most infamously 2000's horrendous Mission to Mars, which only barely made its $100 million budget back and scored De Palma a Worst Director Razzie nomination.

Here's a fun fact: De Palma has actually had five Worst Director nods throughout his career, three of them bafflingly for critically acclaimed movies (Dressed to Kill, Scarface and Body Double).

Sadly, the most successful thing to have his name attached recently was last year's documentary, De Palma, which thoroughly examined the filmmaker's career.

Will It Happen?: Though his last film (Passion) made just 5% of its budget back at the box office, De Palma is actually shooting his next movie, Domino, at the time of press, and with it starring Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice van Houten, hopefully it'll get some much-needed attention back on the director.

Then again, would it surprise anyone if it ended up going direct-to-VOD? At least De Palma has his legacy, but considering he's nearing 80 years of age, it'd be a shame if his career ended without another big hit.
