14 Movie Posters And DVD Covers That Blatantly Lied To You

4. Return To Oz

Fantastic Four WTF Poster
Buena Vista

Return to Oz is another difficult film to market considering it’s aimed at children yet is one of the most terrifying things you’ll ever see. It’s also a sequel to The Wizard Of Oz, but it really has very little to do with it in terms of tone and characters. If you were just going off the marketing, though, you’d think the two are identical.

First of all, the official theatrical poster and covers definitely make the film seem like more of a lighthearted family adventure, which threw a lot of people off when it was actually super dark and scary. Aside from the tone, though, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion are also featured prominently as part of the cast, obviously trying to draw in people who were fans of the original movie.

They must have been surprised, then, when both the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion only appear for one scene, and neither of them have any lines. In fact, this time the Cowardly Lion can’t even speak - he just growls.

Kids were roped in by the promise of seeing more of their favorite Wizard of Oz characters, but all they got were nightmares about the Wheelers that would last a lifetime.
