One of two films on the list to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, District 9 was the feature effort of filmmaker Neill Blomkamp and was a sort of phenomenon in its day. The best picture nomination came just one year after The Dark Knight was snubbed, a bright-lit future that the Academy could send love to non-traditional Oscar-darlings.
The sci-fi drama is a tale about what would really happen if aliens came to earth. They immediately become second-class citizens and are reserved to poverty-ridden slums just outside of Johannesburg.
